This is a photo of a few of the Robinson's crew
taken on liberty in Mers el Kiber (Oran), Algeria in April of 1945. The
occasion was a softball game ashore there - we called it
"beer-ball" as it was a chance to drink a few beers as well as
play softball. You can see that everyone was having a good time! I don't
remember who took the picture. Cameras were forbidden aboard ship so there
were probably fewer than a dozen cameras on board, not counting the ship's
camera (a Kodak 35mm as I recall). It is evident that nobody was feeling
any pain when the photo was taken. I can identify very few of the
crewmembers. The Officer in charge, if I recall correctly, was the gunnery
officer, Lt. Ayers, I believe. That's me on the left - a little apart from
the rest - holding a bottle of beer and with a silly grin on my face. The
picture is not too good - it has been around a lot of years - but it's the
only one I have of some of the crew. Perhaps if it is shown on the
Robinson web site, someone can identify some of those in the photo. If
not, at least you may get some enjoyment from it.
Incidentally, all four of my sons have a copy of this
picture - they got quite a kick out of it. Their generation can't relate
to WW2 but most at least understand a little of what it was like.
The man kneeling - front row left is, I think, a
first-class petty officer named Mullins, predictably called
"Moon" after the comic strip character. Many of the others are
familiar faces, but I can't name them, I'm sorry to say.

I served on the DE220 from July 1944 to May 1946. These two
pictures that may be of interest to those who were aboard during this time
frame.
The first picture is of the fire room crew taken in Oran sometime in 1945.
First Row: S.G. Sisco, Alex Knapp, Fred Whitney with Gizmo
Second Row: O.I. Willis, Dan Musser, J.R. Terlizzi, E.R. Thorpe,
Tom Quinter, R.L. Wilson
Third Row: C.Y. Wewiora, J.B.Waltman, Guy Turner, Bob White
Last Row: Bill Treadway, J.C. Garnand, Chief Fields, T.F. Lozito, Metro
Poburchak, C.A. Schoyen
The penmanship on my original copy is not all that clear, and I may have
some of the spelling incorrect.
The second picture is of the crew admiring a shark that was caught off of
Key West in October 1945.
I hope these are of some use for you.
