Wartime shortages forced builders to install
different power plants in DE Hulls. As a result, ships designed for 12,000
horsepower often received engines that produced only 6,000 horsepower. This
variation obviously extended the DE's range at the expense of top
speeds. The conversions were coded according to their power plant and
armament as follows:
1. WGT = Geared Turbine Drive
w/5" Guns
2. TE = Turbine Electric Drive
w/3" Guns
3. DET = Diesel Electric Tandem Motor Drive, Long
Hull w/3" Guns
4. GMT = Diesel Electric Tandem Motor Drive, Short Hull
5. TEV = Turbine Electric Drive w/5" Guns
6. FMR = Geared Fairbanks-Morse Diesels, Reverse Drive
w/3" Guns
The APD conversions were only made
to the TE and TEV hulls.
